Abstract
Although James Parkinson stated that there were no psychological or cognitive symptoms particular to Parkinson's disease when he described it in 1817,1 authors for one hundred years have noted an association between a variety of psychological symptoms and the disorder. This article reviews thirteen patients suffering from Parkinson's disease who were sufficiently impaired to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital during a two year period. It compares the phenomenology of their psychiatric symptoms to that described in the literature of the last 100 years and uses these cases to speculate on the common neuroanatomical and physiological bases such psychological and motor symptoms might have.
